And then imagine incorporating middle school and high school home ec students as makers of the soup and breads. Locally, at the high school level, teaming with culinary students from the Elkhart Area Career Center. Even the chili cook-offs that are done could affiliate themselves with the program and local schools. And from the looks of things all you'd need to know is available at Empty Bowls' website.

I like the rewrite, especially the addition that talks about many children living in a very small world and that they must be introduced to a larger world outside of their own. I agree with that 100 percent.

Last week I was visiting a friend in Florida. His girlfriend is a school teacher and mentioned she had done the Empty Bowls thing a few years ago. I'm glad I knew what she was talking about and could throw in my 2 cents on the matter. :-)

This is such a great revision. Again, your visuals made me laugh and reminisce (sp?) of my own pregnancies.

I enjoyed reading this and think it would be great to hear on an NPR segment (I forget the name of the segment)!

What time does the show start, and how old are the youngest? Cause I gotta tell you -- when our oldest two were in pre-school and the show was supposed to start at 7, didn't actually get under way until 7:15, and lasted an hour, I questioned the sanity of the director of the program. Our kids had been in school all day, it was hot in the auditorium, the manure had just been spread outside; they are really lucky there wasn't some poor kid starting a "barf-o-rama." As long as I got to see my kid, I'd be happy to get out after 25 minutes.

You sound very organized and well-prepared! My wife worked with young children for nearly a decade and I know how hectic that can be. Good work on a succesfull program. I'm sure the parents (and the kids) enjoyed it. Having an art show before the program begins also sounds like a good option. Good luck with that next year at Monger.

I feel a little unsure about the cellphones and driving issue. I know common sense tells me that it may be easier to get distracted and have an accident if people are using their cell phones while they're driving, but do you know if there is any actual evidence that this is true? I'm not really sure where to look, but I'd be curious to know if more accidents are caused by people when they're on the phone than when they're not.

You are so right about this Jeanette, but I must admit I'm one of those people who use the cell phone and talk and drive all at the same time. It's dangerous I know. But there are times when it can't be helped. Because of my job, I'm on the road a lot. I have clients that I may need to talk to during those rides. Unfortunately, it's the nature of my business. Nonethesless, because I know it's dangerous I should at least make an effort to change my behavior. So I will be purchasing a hands-free " head-thingy". After all, if I'm not a part of the solution, then I'm a part of the problem.

I'm glad you've come to the end of your programs. It seems as if they took a great deal of your energy...but I attribute that to your pregnancy. ;0) You seem to be very committed to your students and as a parent, I think that's great!!

Also, thanks for the comment you left regarding Geraldine Ferraro's comments. One thing though; you said you're glad your not a Democrat. In my eyes, it's not what you are on the outside but what you are on the inside. In addition, feeling that you have to be on pins and needles if a Black becomes President [for that matter a woman as well]should tell us all that something is wrong with our nation. If we treat each other as equals and with respect, we wouldn't have to worry about offending when the intent of our actions are sincere and without prejudice.

Congratulations on your successful program. I am sure that no one even knew that the program was shorter than planned. When you work with children, you have to be flexible and it sounds like you did a great job of rearranging everything to make your program a success.
